If you're a spiritual girl like me who believes in the energies beyond our senses, natural stones might help serve as your transmitter. While exploring gemstones, I came across moonstones and was immediately hooked. If you’ve ever wondered what moonstone is good for, this guide will walk you through it all. Its meaning, benefits for emotional and hormonal balance, jewellery uses and where to buy the best specimens with the highest energies.

Previously, I wrote about another fascinating stone called Zultanite, which you can read Here.

What is a Moonstone?

Moonstone is a gem-quality variety of the feldspar group (mainly orthoclase and albite). Its signature is hue - a soft, floating light that shimmers across the stone when you turn it. That inner glow is caused by microscopic layers of feldspar that scatter light. High-quality moonstones often show a blue-white sheen and glassy translucence.

Because of its geology and classic look, moonstone is favoured for pendants, earrings, and delicate rings rather than heavy daily-wear pieces.

How are Moonstones Formed?

Moonstones belong to the feldspar mineral family and are formed deep within the Earth’s crust. Over millions of years, layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar stack and intergrow. When light enters the stone, it scatters between these layers, creating the magical blue-white shimmer known as adularescence. Most natural moonstones are found in molten rocks, and Sri Lanka is one of the world’s most famous sources.

Why Should Women Own Moonstones?

In a spiritual and astrological sense, Women are much closer to the lunar energy, and moonstones are activated by moonlight. This moonlight sits close to the energy that runs inside of us, helping women regulate feelings, menstrual cycles, creativity and overall calmness. That's why Moonstones are called the 'stone of the divine feminine'.

What is a Moonstone good for? - Benefits for Everyday

While many of these benefits aren't scientifically proven, it's widely accepted. You can wear it every day, and it's such a beautiful stone that;

Brings Emotional balance

Moonstone is said to ease stress and soothe mood swings, and is ideal for those having frequent changes happening in their lives.

Improves Intuition & creativity

Many use it during meditation or journaling to deepen intuition and creative flow. If you're on the artistic side, moonstones may give you the extra push to be bold in your art.

Gently supports hormonal balance

While there's no scientific backing, traditionally, moonstones are linked to feminine cycles. Those who feel the surrounding energies use moonstone as a complementary aid for menstrual discomfort and fertility-focused rituals (note: This is NOT a substitute for medical care).

Emitts calmness

Small moonstone pendants or beads are popular travel talismans, subtle, pretty, and grounding. It helps ease anxiety and bring calmness in stressful environments.

Should I buy only the Moonstone or the Moonstone Jewellery?

Buy the moonstone jewellery, better a moonstone ring for the little finger. A person purchases moonstones for 2 different reasons. Firstly, for its beauty and second, for its benefits. The moonstone is a semi-precious stone and does not have much market value, but it's one of the most uniquely mesmerising stones and should be adorned as an accessory. Plus, its benefits come when you sync your energy with its own. I would recommend adding a moonstone to a bracelet, rings or earrings that are subtle yet sit close to your skin.

Natural Moonstone Vs. Lab-made Moonstone

Natural moonstones are mined from the earth and carry the raw energy of nature. Each stone has unique inclusions and variations, making them one of a kind. Lab-made or synthetic moonstones, on the other hand, are manufactured to mimic the look but lack the natural shimmer, depth, and spiritual energy. While lab-created stones can be cheaper, it has no real value or benefit. Plus, any expert can easily see its lack of inclusions.

How to Activate Moonstone?

  • Step 1 - Cleanse your moonstone from external energies by holding it under running water for about 5 seconds or dusting it with sage.

  • Step 2 - Expose it to moonlight overnight (strongest under a full moon) to recharge.

  • Step 3 - Wear it the next morning and have it on you for the next 24 hours to sync its energy with yours. Make sure during this time, you claim no negative energy or agitation.

  • Step 4 - Store it in a safe place away from sunlight and heat.

How to Carve a Moonstone?

It’s best to take it to a professional to carve a Moonstone, as it's a soft gem; care and patience are required. Suppose you're aiming to become a professional. In that case, you can use a diamond-tipped rotary tool or fine lapidary equipment, starting with gentle grinding to form the shape, followed by polishing to reveal its signature shimmer, the adularescence.

How Often Should I Clean My Moonstone?

You should clean your moonstone once in 3 months by gently rubbing it with clean water. Do not expose it to heat of any sort or strong chemicals and washing agents. If you're constantly faced with negative energy at a workplace or at home, make sure you increase the frequency of cleaning your moonstone and recharging it.

How Do I Prolong My Moonstone?

Moonstones are delicate (with a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale). Store them separately to avoid scratches, and avoid ultrasonic cleaners. To keep its energy fresh, recharge it frequently under moonlight, ideally during a full moon, and keep it away from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can dull its glow.

Can Men Wear Moonstone?

Absolutely! While moonstone is often called the “divine feminine crystal,” it’s not exclusive to women. The stone represents emotional balance, intuition, and calm, qualities that benefit everyone.

For men, wearing moonstone helps balance masculine energy with emotional intelligence and clarity. Many male spiritual practitioners or creatives use moonstone to strengthen empathy, soften anger, and improve focus during stressful periods.

How to Know if My Moonstone is Real or Fake?

types of moonstone

Real moonstones have a subtle, natural shimmer known as adularescence, where light dances across the surface in blue (more expensive) or white hues when moved under light. The glow looks like it’s coming from within the stone rather than sitting on top.

Here’s how to tell:

  • Look for Iridescence: Real moonstones display soft light play, not glittery sparkle.

  • Check Transparency: Genuine ones are semi-transparent or milky with internal layers or inclusions, never clear.

  • Temperature Test: Real gemstones feel cool to the touch, while glass or resin imitations warm quickly.

  • Price Check: Authentic moonstone, especially from Sri Lanka, is never cheap. If it looks too good to be true, it likely is.

  • Seek Certification: If buying jewellery, ensure it comes from a verified gem dealer or includes authenticity certification. In Asian countries, gem certifications are often a hoax, and lab inspections are the best way to confirm the value. Or purchasing from a well-established seller.

Where to Buy the Best Moonstones in Sri Lanka?

Moonstone is one of the earliest gems ever mined from Sri Lanka, and you’ll find a stunning variety across the island. The Ratnapura and Galle regions are especially famous as Sri Lanka’s “Gem Cities,” offering everything from raw stones to beautifully set jewellery. However, be cautious of tourist traps and guides who might sell low-quality stones at inflated prices. I bought my moonstone earrings from the Gem Museum in Colombo 03; they're a trusted family-run business. They have a wonderful collection worth browsing if you’re in the city.

Conclusion

Moonstone isn’t just a gemstone; it’s a symbol of intuition, emotional balance, and divine feminine energy. Whether you wear it as a ring, pendant, or keep it close during meditation, its gentle glow reminds you to stay calm and connected to your inner strength. For those visiting Sri Lanka, don’t miss the chance to buy an authentic Sri Lankan moonstone,
